Summary
Riddle James Camperdown expects the summer of 1972 to be sunkissed and lazy, and she plans to spend it sipping iced tea and reading Trixie Belden at her Cape Cod home, ducking her parents' high-voltage banter whenever possible. Her father, Godfrey "Camp" Camperdown, is a World War II hero turned idealistic union politician running for office from the family compound in Wellfleet. Her mother, Greer, is his perfect foil: a former Hollywood actress armed with a razor-sharp wit, a French manicure, and a wicked one-liner for every occasion. One day, to her shock, Riddle accidentally stumbles upon a crime in a neighbor's barn. Unsure of what she's witnessed, she chooses to keep quiet, but her secret grows more and more dangerous, and the cracks in her family's facade begin to show. As Camp's political campaign heats up, another powerful family--cunning and capable Michael Devlin and his bewitching son Harry--emerges with an uneasy connection to the Camperdown clan, and the stakes are raised even further. With every day that passes, the crime looms larger, the silence heavier, and the trail of consequences for Riddle and her family ever more tangled as she scrambles for the courage to admit the truth before her family falls apart
Summary
The Last Summer of the Camperdowns, introduces Riddle James Camperdown, the twelve-year-old daughter of the idealistic Camp and his manicured, razor-sharp wife, Greer. It's 1972, and Riddle's father is running for office from the family compound in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Between Camp's desire to toughen her up and Greer's demand for glamour, Riddle has her hands full juggling her eccentric parents. When she accidentally witnesses a crime close to home, her confusion and fear keep her silent. As the summer unfolds, the consequences of her silence multiply. Another mysterious and powerful family, the Devlins, slowly emerges as the keeper of astonishing secrets that could shatter the Camperdowns. As an old love triangle, bitter war wounds, and the struggle for status spiral out of control, Riddle can only watch, hoping for the courage to reveal the truth
